BRISBANE, AUS-(5-12-2002) After two days of blustery Northerly conditions Today dawned calm, very calm indeed all classes were held ashore to allow the breeze to settle and fill.
When the wind did fill in racing got back into full swing with both Race Officers able to set courses that gave all competitors an opportunity to display their talent and skill. And after yesterday's blow-out it was as important for the competitors as it was the organisers to ensure all four scheduled races in the Four Winds International Movers Sail Brisbane regatta were completed.
On the Northern Course Area, the 49er's got away early with Mark Turnbull and Nick Partridge holding off Chris Nicholson and Gary Boyd and the German pairing of Gabriel Wicke and Wolf Jeschonnek in race one. In race two Nicholson & Boyd had a comfortable win from John Harris and Euan McNicol with Ben & Marcus Tardrew third. Turnbull & Partridge took out the third race of the day from the Germans and Nicholson, local sailor Jason Beebe had his best result of the day with a fourth. Race four and Nicholson & Gray again came back with a win, Emmett Lazich & Max Groy placed second ahead of Jason Beebe & Phil Manning. Going into the final day Nicholson & Boyd hold a 9 point lead over Turnbull & Partridge.
The 29ers were reduced to just two boats today, Clint & Ty Marshall taking race 1 and Scott Trenoweth & Grant Hudson races 2, 3 and 4.
On the Southern course area Gerald Owens & Ross Killian (Ireland) won race 1 from Matthew & Dan Belcher and Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page. Wilmot & Page picked up the pace in race two for a narrow win from Gildas Philippe (France) and Owens in third. Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold medallists Jenny Armstrong & Belinda Stowell finished fifth. Race three also went to Wilmot & Page, from Owens & Killian with Armstrong & Stowell third. After an abandonment due to wind shifts race four finally got underway late in the day and again Wilmot & Page were victorious pushing them into the lead with one days sailing to go. The Irish team placed second ahead of Nathan Outteridge and Ayden Menzies.
Lauren Jeffries took up from where she left off on Tuesday with a comfortable win in race one of the 420 class, Scott Webster showed improved form to place second ahead of Andrew Heerey. Race two saw a complete reversal of positions with Tom Barker first, Anna Patterson second and Scott Webster third. Andrew Heerey and Jono Walker took out the third race with Lauren Jeffries & Angus Tapp second just ahead of Scott Webster & Luke Allen. Race four is subject to protest following a start line incident involving Scott Webster and Lydia Allen.
The Laser Radial's first race was won by Simon Hurling from Cassie Buckley and David Schmidt. Race two saw a number of competitors OCS with Hurling again first home followed by Sarnia Upham and Courtney Thomas. Race three was also won by Hurling, from Buckley and Cameron Ewers. Hurling was OCS in race four, allowing Courtney Thomas to win from Sarah Lawrence and Cassie Buckley.
In the Laser 4.7's Paul Brinkley stole a march on his two closest rivals with wins in all four heats of the day. Michael Johns moved into second overall just ahead of brother Thomas.
The 125's and Flying 11's also completed four races, Jack Anderson winning all four heats in the 125's whilst Mitchell Cavill and Rhys McClintock shared the wins in the Flying 11 class.
Racing concludes tomorrow with the final four races followed by the prize giving presentations.
